According to Sky Sports, Sheffield United are interested in signing Brentford winger Ollie Watkins.
The 23-year-old has been incredible in the Championship since signing for the Bees in 2017, and he might be in line to get his first Premier League move this summer.
United’s policy
Sheffield United seem intent on signing players from the Championship this summer. Lee Gregory, Oliver McBurnie, Britt Assombalonga and Neal Maupay are just a few of the names that have been linked with the Blades.
If Chris Wilder is set on buying from the second tier, then he could do a lot worse than bringing in Watkins.
The winger has a fantastic record in the division, and aged just 23 there is a lot of room to grow.
He has hit double figures in terms of goals during both of his seasons at Griffin Park, as well as providing 13 assists during that time.
New style
For Watkins to fit into Wilder’s squad, something has to change.
The former Exeter man is best utilised as a winger, and the Yorkshire club have been using a 5-2-1-2 system in the past couple of seasons which doesn’t incorporate wingers.
This means that there could be a change in formation on the horizon at Bramall Lane, but it’s more likely that Watkins will be moving centrally.
Moving the winger into the middle could be an inspired move – he has the passing capabilities to play as an attacking midfielder as well as being deadly when shooting from range.
The Brentford man could also be deployed as a number nine, and Wilder may be looking to kill two birds with one stone with this signing as they have previously been linked with several attacking midfielders and strikers.
